Computer Information Technology Programs

This degree prepares the student for careers such as computer application programmer, medical records specialist, computer security professional, database administrator, computer system manager, computer network manager, software engineer, Management Information Systems (MIS) manager, customer support engineer, computer sales representative, or educator and trainer in the field of computer applications. The US Army asked Bell Laboratories to design a machine to assist in testing its M-9 gun director, a type of analog computer that aims large guns to their targets. Mathematician George Stibitz recommends using a relay-based calculator for the project. The result was the Relay Interpolator, later called the Bell Labs Model II. The Relay Interpolator used 440 relays, and since it was programmable by paper tape, was used for other applications following the war.

Systems engineer: Operating systems provide the foundation for computers and devices to function. Microsoft Windows, Linux, and iOS are examples of types of operating systems. Systems engineers design and create those types of systems for use in personal computers, phones, and even cars. According to PayScale , the median pay for systems engineers is $76,593.

At a cost to computer makers of roughly $700, the ASR-33 Teletype is originally designed as a low cost terminal for the Western Union communications network. Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, the ASR-33 was a popular and inexpensive choice of input and output device for minicomputers and many of the first generation of microcomputers. Graduates can expect to work in a variety of environments, including banks, insurance companies, large stores, manufacturing companies, public utilities, government agencies, health care agencies, hospitals, and many other kinds of departments and businesses that use computers and networks.

Information Technology (IT) careers are exploding, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting 550,000 new IT hires needed nationwide by 2026. Most of those jobs are related to the internet, whether it’s cloud computing and network security or web and app development. The Industry Sponsored Student Projects program (ISSP) provides students with real-life experience by working on IT or software projects directly from industry. Students work in teams or individually with an industry sponsor, proceeding through the development life-cycle to develop a complete IT or software solution.

The most common degree types in computer science and technology are the Bachelor and Master of Computer Science, and the Bachelor and Master of Information Technology. In general, Computer Science programs focus on the technical work of creating computer programs, networks, and tools, while IT degrees focus on the use of computer technology to solve problems in areas such as business, government, or education.
