The admission requirement for computer systems and engineering tech programs at Ontario colleges is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with a grade 12 English and mathematics credit. Additional mathematics classes may be required. Another significant problem can be the selection of software installed on technology 32 – instructors trained in one set of software (for example Ubuntu 33 ) can be expected to have difficulty in navigating computers donated with different software (for example Windows XP ).
Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology program (BSCT) provides knowledge and skills in computer networking, electronics product design, computer circuits, and word processing. The program also includes topics in computer troubleshooting, programming and hardware analysis. GPRC graduates with a Diploma in Computer Systems Technology may receive 2 years or 60 credits of transfer credit toward admission to year three of this degree.
A computer science degree gives students a rigorous education in discrete mathematics and computer science theory. Most CS graduates go on to become software developers or Web programmers, and those who continue on to graduate-level schooling have the chance to do research or work in more specialized roles, such as advanced artificial intelligence programming.
The Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) computer is a multi-year research project conducted under the overall supervision of world-famous mathematician John von Neumann. The notion of storing both data and instructions in memory became known as the ‘stored program concept’ to distinguish it from earlier methods of instructing a computer. The IAS computer was designed for scientific calculations and it performed essential work for the US atomic weapons program. Over the next few years, the basic design of the IAS machine was copied in at least 17 places and given similar-sounding names, for example, the MANIAC at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory; the ILLIAC at the University of Illinois; the Johnniac at The Rand Corporation; and the SILLIAC in Australia.
