Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. Computer scientists are, in fact, scientists. They are focused with the theory of computational applications. That means they understand the why” behind computer programs. Using algorithms and advanced mathematics, computer scientists invent new ways to manipulate and transfer information. Computer scientists are generally concerned with software, operating systems and implementation.
Finally, computer and technology programs are a natural fit for online learning, for the obvious reasons – you learn to program, analyze, and use computers on computers, so why not streamline the process with an online program? If you have access to the technology on your own, there may be no reason to sit in a room of computers and other students.
Ethics, laws, and policies for privacy, security, and liability. With the increasing advancement of DL (#1), robotics (#5), technological assistance (#s 6 and 7), and applications of AI (#10), technology has moved beyond society’s ability to control it easily. Mandatory guidance has already been deeply analyzed and rolled out in various aspects of design ( see the IEEE standards association document ), and it is further being applied to autonomous and intelligent systems and in cybersecurity. But adoption of ethical considerations will speed up in many vertical industries and horizontal technologies.

Molly Suver came to the UO in search of an education that would allow her lots of room for academic exploration and cross-fertilization of ideas. She loves the CIS program because its base in theory allows for interdisciplinary research. Don’t be afraid to take classes that don’t exactly fit your major,” Molly recommends. Her work with Professor Steve Fickas produces hardware and software to assist the cognitively impaired in speaking and increasing normal motor skills, but Molly has also worked on games for the Xbox 360 with the Game Development Club. She even took second place in an undergraduate programming competition. What Molly didn’t want out of her education was an aggressively competitive environment. She gets that on the field leading Fugue , the UO’s nationally-ranked women’s Ultimate Frisbee club.
